CAMPS, EXCURSION and OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Students experience an engaging and fun life at Playford College. The range of experiences change from Foundation to Senior Secondary School, with the emphasis of creating a learning environment and culture which intrigues children’s brains and puts smiles on their faces.
Our teachers are creative and make classroom life interesting. They use incursions and excursions to encourage children to wonder and learn from the real world. Our camps are wonderful social and meaningful learning occasions and include visiting many parts of South Australia during their schooling years.
Some of these camps include:
- Year 3 one or two night camp at places like Narnu Farm on Hindmarsh Island with a focus on farm life and horse riding.
- Year 4 two night camp at places like Swan Reach with a focus on the River Murray or two night camp at Aldinga with focus on Aboriginal history and culture.
- Year 5 two-night camp at Strathalbyn with a focus on horse riding, archery, sheep herding and other fun.
- Year 6 two night adventure camp where students are challenged to grow in confidence and resilience.
- Year 7 three or four night tour of Canberra with a focus on democracy and the Australia’s capital.
- Year 8 three night camp at Victor Harbor with a focus on marine life, history geography and aquatics.
- Year 9 four day camp to Kangaroo Island focusing on flora, fauna, tourism and history.
- Year 10 three day camp at the Murrylands Aquatics Centre with a focus on water skiing, knee-boarding, sailing, kayaking, driving a boat and other aquatic skills.
- Year 12 students are invited to a retreat during Term 1 to confirm study habits and build resilience for the year ahead.
These camps are subject to change depending on the structure of classes and the topics being taught. Playford College believes camps are an important part of the curriculum and learning of our students.
CELEBRATIONS
School celebrations at Playford College are a blend of religious observances and occasions and non-religious festivities. Some of the religious occasions celebrated at Playford College include Unity Day, Prophet Muhammad’s birthday week, Ramadan activities Muharram Program and Hajj week. Other celebrations include Mothers’ and Fathers’ Days, Harmony Day, Book Week, Science Week and the Premier’s Reading Challenge as a whole school focus. For Mother’s and Father’s Day, the College organises a stall for students to buy gifts for parents and loved ones as well as a hosting a breakfast for parents on both occasions.
These celebrations foster a sense of school spirit, community, and belonging between students, staff, and families. They provide opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and leadership among students whilst creating lasting memories and reinforcing the importance of joy and togetherness in our school culture.
SPORTS
The students at Playford College participate in extensive extra-curricular sporting opportunities through the South Australian Primary Schools Sports Association (SAPSASA) and the South Australian Secondary Schools Sports Association (SASSSA). Our involvement with the Sporting Schools grants program has enabled badminton, AFL football, cricket, tennis and volleyball to be introduced to our students, allowing them to participate in inter-school sporting competitions, thus fostering positive relationships with the community.
Sports at Playford College are a vibrant and integral part of many of our students’ lives. It gives them the opportunities to build and showcase their athletic abilities and skills, whilst developing teamwork, communication and sportsmanship.
SCHOOL HOUSE TEAMS
All Students are allocated to one of four Houses:
– House of Fatimah (Green)
– House of Asiya (Yellow)
– House of Zainab (Red)
– House of House of Mariam (Blue)
During Primary and Secondary Sports Day, students represent their houses by wearing the colours. Students are also involved in many extra- curricular activities that can accumulate house points throughout the year.
ELECTIVES
Elective subjects provide an added alternate learning experience for our Middle School students to both enjoy and benefit from. These classes allow students to engage in co-curricular activities that complement the learning they are doing in the classroom, thus providing them with additional skills and lifelong abilities.
Current Friday afternoon electives include sports such as soccer, basketball, volleyball and badminton. Students can also choose to participate in cooking, art and study.
CLUBS
Within the College, after school and lunch-time clubs are popular and activities offered include Choir, Poetry, Math, homework, netball, Art, story time, knitting, soccer, basketball and spelling. These clubs are seasonal and are run according to staff availability and children’s interest.
